Following the plans of the overall ship there’re sections for all the different functions and equipment aboard the Jupiter 2. The book is full of realistically realized blueprints that show the ship’s functions and capabilities and ratios and inner workings to satisfy all but the most compulsively detail oriented. In a good mix between fact and fiction, the Lost in Space: Jupiter 2 Technical Guide moves effortlessly between how the Jupiter 2, originally named Gemini 12, but series creator Irwin Allen wanted to distance it from the contemporary NASA space program which was in the Gemini phase of the space program, was created by Allen’s model makers, and as the series went on and more capabilities of the Jupiter 2 were explicated in the scripts how the ship mysteriously grew larger. I first saw technical plans for the Enterprise in the late 70’s (yes, I’m a Trekkie, but I also had my Lost in Space period) and I wondered why people tried to illustrate a fictional world (didn’t stop me from buying it either), then as I was going through the plans that I was engrossed in the detail and in the conjecture of what or how something on the Enterprise, that hadn’t been seen on the show was supposed to operate, and I realized that the technical plans or blueprints where an extension of the imaginative process started by the shows creators, and the Lost in Space: Jupiter 2 Technical Guide is a good resource for Lost in Space fans who want to explore that world a little more closely and in detail. With seeming half of fandom writing stories and designing games for the other half, we expect this to become the standard reference for the expedition that was Lost in Space. Written by professionals and edited by an aerospace engineer, it makes the hardware as real as possible while remaining true to the stories. The problem is that many of those works were more rooted in fantasy than the show was. Many of the fans, who watched the show as wide-eyed youngsters, went on to write the tech manuals that, with the rise of the Internet, have spread worldwide. Vestiges of this research can still be found in the function of the Jupiter 2 and the other equipment of the expedition. In fact, considerable research into real space flight and serious science fiction concepts of space travel went into the show s design. LiS wasn t just a monster-of-the-week show. This book takes over where previous fan generated efforts have left off. Now 45 years after it debuted on CBS, folks are still enthralled by the adventures of the Space Family Robinson travelling around the galaxy in their iconic spaceship, the Jupiter 2.
